Sparta and Athens are completely different cultures, and when the two aren't fighting together against the Persians, they are usually fighting eachother. This is why:
Athens General Laws - Athens is the cradle of democracy, with an emphasis in education and philosophy. Athenians value the arts, such as sculpting, painting, or pottery.
- Access to the sea makes it valuable for trade amongst other lands. Great naval power.
- Games are valued, but not military training. Athenians liked gymnasiums - to show athletic might. They also liked plays.
- Eupatridae: the aristocracy who run the country along with the kings. It is not a monarchy, like Sparta. It is a democracy, and most things are voted upon.
- Population was enormous. Along witht he Eupatridae, most of the inhabitants are foreigners or slaves, who had political rights and paid a tax to live in Athens.
Women - Athenian women wore heavy, concealing clothes and were rarely seen outside the house.
- Adultery is not punishable by death, and Athenians are more tolerant of sexual freedom. Women as actors or entertainers of the nature are still looked down upon.
- Women do not own property separate of their husbands, and lack much of the independence of Sparta.
