-is not a comic book person-
Good luck with that. I know the UPS man by name, he's here enough to be my husband. He's pretty cute too. As for the body, I know. David Wenham didn't look too shabby either. Gerard's beard totally made the character.

For the Lord's sake this is a history thread not a thread to exalt the massively fit and apperantly uber hot Spartans. Makes me feel bad..... *Looks at four pack* ;D Aww there there Leonidas! A four pack is not shabby at all. You're just as buff and tough as those Spartans XD *swoons again* I'd see that movie and watch it with the sound off - they're just...Wow. That's all I have to say about that. On a HISTORICAL note, excluding buff uber-manly-ness, I've heard the Iranians complain about the movie/ban it/accuse Americans of anti-Iranian war propaganda... I agree with Leonidas. I think it's a comment on how humans in general depict "the enemy" - not some American anti-Iranian thing. World War II, the Jews were not depicted as human. Or the Germans. Or the Japanese. It's just natural for people to depict their enemies as less than human, because then it seems to justify the war. Plus, it makes a lot better story if you show the Persians as not-quite human, but more vicious. Stronger, exotic. Makes the Spartan success seem even more incredible in holding them off for as long as they did. But man, when those Immortals showed their faces? That was some heavy duty... "eeeeuuuwww." Sort of reminded me of Lord of the Rings Orcs : / Or maybe Predator. The same "eeeuuuww" factor. They were pretty rough looking fellas.

rather repulsing if you ask me, I was glad when all them persians got decapitated so i would not have to look at their faces (Plus the gore was awesome).
Also I remembered, Leonidas actually did march with the Ephors blessing. The whole Carniea thing was the reason they did not march off to help the Athenians at Marathon I belive.

They reminded me more of the Creeper from Jeepers Creepers or the Gremlins that the Orcs, really. And poor Leonidas. I'm making my significant other go to the gym now because of that movie, so don't feel bad. You're cooler than the Spartans, you wouldn't drop your baby off a cliff....I hope......
-shifty eyes-
Sorry, Lyle, can't help you there. Try wikipedia.

I read somewhere (I can't think of where at the moment...) that the Spartans fought nude.
Granted, I really have no idea how accurate than information is since I cannot remember where to find it...
But, there is a painting by a man named Jacques-Louis David, who painted Leonidas at Thermopylae (1814) in which all of the Spartans are depicted as nude (save for their helmets and cloaks/capes). Anyway, I just thought that was interesting.

Okay another thing I have noticed with many o' the Spartans - The Spartan Warriors were not Warriors by profession, like all Greeks they were citizen soildiers who came to fight when called upon. They had normal professions like Blacksmith, farmer (landowner of course), tailor ect.. The only difference between them and most Greeks is that they had a lot more training than everyone else.
All in all, Get real proffessions. Not sure where I should have posted this so I put it here.

As a rite of passage, Spartans killed three unarmed slaves, unlike in the movie where they killed a dire wolf. Makes them just as monstrous as the Persians, don't you think?

I heard that Spartan Warriors, as they were taken away from their mothers and other women at a young age, turned out homosexual (Most, not all)

Agreed. Though what you say, Dilios, surprises me. From what I've read, it was a "mentor" relationship, and many Spartans viewed it as a necessity. They could love their wives, but as Apollinaris says it was a method of instilling trust between a younger and older warrior. It was also part of the transition to manhood, from the submissive position to dominant. I don't believe it was completely black/white homosexuality. I'm sure there were gay Spartans, but you do not "turn" gay. For many, I'm sure it was simply custom.

- Emotions are looked down upon. You never show weakness, you never cry. ADULTERY IS PROHIBITED. The Spartans value marriage, and it is punishable by death if you are caught.
Adultery was actively encouraged (for Women) in later Spartan society, their elitism caused their 'warrior elite' citizens to be quickly diminished. It was quite obviously, unsustainable in a long term society... there was also a semi-spartan 'class' not considered full citizens, but neither were they slaves... - Citizenship is inherited by blood. You aren't "Spartan" unless you can trace your heritage back to the original founders of the city. Only these "Spartiates" are considered true citizens. two exceptions: 1 adopted (Trophimoi or "foster sons") foreign students; and 2 adopted helots (syntrophoi), who found a patron to pay their way through the Agogi... if they did exceptionally well they could be sponsored to join the Spartiates... I read somewhere (I can't think of where at the moment...) that the Spartans fought nude.
Some of them did... but not all throughout their history. Sparta lasted a long time and its customs changed over the years... I heard that Spartan Warriors... turned out homosexual It was a part of Greek culture at large; but very engrained into spartan culture... *so grease up boys! They had normal professions like Blacksmith, farmer (landowner of course), tailor ect.. No they didn't. They were forbidden to partake in trade or manufacture, which consequently rested in the hands of the perioeci, and were also forbidden (in theory) to possess either gold or silver. Any information on ol Captain Artemis? ARTEMIS was the great Olympian goddess of hunting, wilderness and wild animals. She was also a goddess of childbirth, and the protectress of the girl child up to the age of marriage. her Latin name was Diana... (or was it captain Diana... lol ) ...anyway, the marvel character is 100% fictional I think the actual historical events are much more interesting; but I do appreciate this is based on a comic, not historical fact...
